The Full Story
Concealed Shoes

I began this project as a way to deepen my understanding of Northampton. In exploring its history and identity, I was drawn to the town’s strong connection to shoemaking—particularly the historic Shoe Quarter and its legacy as the City of Shoes.
This research led me to a fascinating cultural practice I’d never encountered before: the tradition of concealed shoes. For centuries, people have hidden shoes within the walls, floors, and chimneys of their homes—believed to be protective charms or symbols of good luck. The more I uncovered, the more intrigued I became by the mystery and symbolism behind this quiet, ritualistic act.
Learning that the Concealed Shoe Register is held at Northampton Museum, it felt especially relevant to explore how stories, superstitions, and objects like shoes carry meaning over time. This discovery became the foundation for a book concept that weaves together themes of place, protection, and hidden narratives—inspired by what people choose to hide, and why.
The more I explored, the more I saw creative potential in using the idea of hidden shoes as a storytelling device—objects that carry memories, protection, or unspoken rituals. It sparked the concept for a book that isn’t just about shoes, but about the spaces they occupy, both physically and emotionally. Inviting readers to uncover meaning not just in the narrative—but in what’s concealed between the pages.
Glow-in-the-Dark Experiments
To explore how print could enhance the story’s atmosphere, I experimented with glow-in-the-dark ink for the book cover. Inspired by the themes of discovery, I tested the effect using glow pens to create a rough mock-up.
In daylight, the design appeared almost invisible; at dusk, it began to emerge—and in complete darkness, the shoe and title glowed in a striking, immersive way. The result felt poetic and aligned with the book’s emotional tone.
Encouraged by this, I began redesigning parts of the book to include 'invisible' printed elements, creating a more immersive and tactile reading experience. These tests reinforced the potential of using unconventional print finishes to support and enhance the story being told.
Initial Concept Development
I also explored alternative approaches to launching the book by drawing inspiration from the themes within the story—specifically the symbolism of the shoe and the emotional weight of its discovery.
Rather than a traditional book launch, I began developing a creative launch strategy that blended immersive storytelling with conceptual design thinking. I considered how elements like neon lighting, atmospheric staging, and specialist print finishes could be used to reveal hidden layers of the narrative—offering a multi-sensory experience that echoes the mystery and poetry of the story.
By experimenting with lighting design, print techniques, and symbolic visuals, I aimed to create a launch concept that not only presents the book but extends its story into the physical space, transforming the act of discovery into something deeply felt and visually striking.
